CORA's vision is to equip underprivileged people in various African regions with the means and skills necessary to bring them to economic stability and independence.
CORA developed from the vision of Tonye Jumbo. Her personal perspective on the need in Africa:
"I still remember vividly, as a child on my way to school, in my chauffeur-driven vehicle. I still remember the anxiety that would knot up my insides as I saw children much younger than I was with oversized trays balanced carefully on their heads, trying to run across the wide highways as cars sped across. I would turn around in my seat and whisper a quick prayer up to heaven asking for angels to take them across safely. I would fix my eyes on them, hold my breath and watch as they ran quickly across the highway. Then I would let out my breath; thank God for yet another accident free crossing. I would think, even at that young age, I would tell myself it should not be this way; those kids deserved to be on their way to school, just like I was. They should not have to bear adult burdens as children, they deserved as much love and care as I received daily from my parents. I would wish then in my childish mind that I was older so I could love them.
Now I am older and see children, teenagers' potential wasting away. I do not only see the need for love, I see hunger, unfulfilled dreams and a yearning hopelessness. Each child clutching the tray on their heads, because selling their quota may be the only chance for a meal. I see a life that I cannot claim to relate to but one I can empathize with. In the midst of all this hopelessness, I see potential. A dreamer? No! An optimist who realizes that as long as we all sit around and wait for the government to turn things around, things will go from bad to worse. A realist who sees that things can and will change if we all contribute in our own little way. No man is an island, cliched but true. For that reason, we should see each other as connected - as family. A hungry child anywhere in the world should be a hungry child to us. It should not matter what color, race or creed. It is important that we unite to lift humankind out of poverty." - Tonye Jumbo, Project Director
